In April 2009, the Himpunan Wastraprema, the Indonesian Traditional Textile ociety hosts ‘Adiwastra Nusantara 2009’ - an exhibition of traditional textiles from across the Indonesian archipelago. The exhibition collates outstanding xamples of traditional woven fabrics, batik and embroideries from throughout Indonesia, including textiles from neighboring countries with which Indonesia hares cultural affinities. A significant focus of the exhibition is a display of head-dresses from the many ethnic groups of the Indonesian archipelago.


The exhibition, entitled “Art to Wear 2009 - Beyond Fashion!”, is partly a response to the government’s program to more fully recognize the cultural diversity of ndonesia and thereby exemplify Indonesia’s contribution to a shared Asian heritage.

The organizers hope that textile researchers, collectors, artisans and enthusiasts ill seize this rare opportunity to showcase their finest artifacts, exchange
information and experiences, learn of new innovations and acquire pieces to ear, keep and treasure.

The 2008 Adiwastra Nusantara Exhibition has been enormously successful, recording sales during the exhibition to the amount of over 20 billion rupiahs. It was also attended by no less than 40,000 people during the 5-day exhibition. This achievement is definitely very encouraging for further activities.

Prompted by our awareness and responsibility as he association or society that appreciates traditional extiles, as well as our determination to preserve such aluable heritage, Himpunan Wastraprema joins forces ith PT Fortune Adwicipta to organize the second diwastra Nusantara Exhibition in 2009 by presenting  bold new creation extravaganza called Art to Wear – Beyond Fashion!

The Adiwastra 2009 will introduce new and exciting developments in designs aptly called the Art to Wear. This creation is borne out of the need to fully express the designers’ and artists’ overflowing creativity, in the form of ready-to-wear fashion, covering almost all aspects of apparel, from men’s and ladies’ wear, footwear, hairdo, headdresses, accessories and other attributes.

A showcase of Art to Wear aims at providing a medium of expression for designers and artists alike to collaborate and create a complete range of apparel to introduce original creations based on Indonesian magnificent couture heritage using indigenous Indonesian textiles.

Aside from Art to Wear, the Exhibition will also feature numerous traditional heritage textiles from across the archipelago such as batik, woven cloths, tie dye, and embroidery in classical or contemporary forms.

The Exhibition is not only tailored for producers, artists, traditional high-end clothes designers to showcase their creations, but it also welcomes renowned designers to participate in the great event of Art to Wear – Beyond Fashion! In addition to Indonesian designers, some well-known designers from neighboring countries have shown great interest and will also be part of the event.
